Instrument of Torture

(also known as a thatch rake)

I spent a couple of hours this morning thatching the grass. That, people, is hard work. I sure hope it helps the lawn.

What a GREAT blog -- don't you love NCLM?

I notice a few things:

1.I am Gemini

2. I lived in Montana AND Colorado and used to hike -- sadly all my hiking is now done on a treadmill -- or if I can haul my ass up north to the northshore.

3. I too am a college prof -- or was until I got the crazy idea in my head that I would quit my composition job to actually use my creative writing degree.

Hi

Hmmm, I knew there was a reason I got rid of the grass in my teeny tiny garden - as much as love the lawn I HATE mowing!

Now I have a lovely patio with plants around the edge and there is very little weeding to do so I can just enjoy the sunshine (when we get any!) and sit in the garden with a glass of....something!

Who knew garden tools could be instruments of torture? Your image brought up a similarly painful memory after an extended weeding and landscaping session. We're letting our yard go to seed (so to speak) as we prepare for a remodel project. What is in the ground will be run over and trampled very soon, so what's the point?

And, I'd like to say a special thanks for your comment on my blog. I have a lot to learn from you. Can't tell you how much I relish "meeting" women in my age group who don't have children and are living happy, fulfilled lives. You offer a window into a world I want to live in. After a few years of reflection and delayed grieving of what might have been I'm ready for a new chapter in my life...

Eek! Didn't they used to make prisoners do that on chain-gangs? Around here that'd earn you the nickname of "dumbass turtle" for killing yourself in the name of the lawn, but then everyone has different priorities (for me a day without a coma is a good one)...I, too, hate Chicago Style. APA all the WAY, bayyyby...and I'm a writing perfesser (or was before I got sick). I have a friend/mentor who goes, with her very earnest husband, who is a Very Big Academic, to these meetings where they argue passionately about the future of pronouns and the use of the semicolon, and nearly come to blows. She and I privately (since we're both supposed to care deeply, too) laugh our arses off over it. Nice to "meet" you via NaComLeavMo!

According to my husband, it will make the lawn look awesome.

Are you sure that's a gardening tool? I'm almost positive I saw that in tray of freaky gynecological accoutrements in "Dead Ringers". Seriously, though, thatching your lawn can work wonders.

Yes, it is an instrument of torture. I cringe just thinking about it. One of the few things I don't miss about having a yard.

Okay, when I first clicked over I thought that picture was of an electric bikini razor and thought, "I've never heard of it as 'thatching the grass' before."

Clearly I need to pay closer attention! :o)

Thankfully hubby does our lawn! Those things are horrible, I have tried using them before, yuck. Visiting from NaComLeavMo & I agree I enjoy the comments as well :) It is fun actually seeing comments on all of your posts, lol.

You are a brave woman, to tackle thatching. When you're finished with yours, c'mon over to my place. I'll buy the beer & pizza. Or, given that it's summer, margaritas and nachos?

The torture implied by the looks of that rake is the resulting aches/pains from completing the job.
